SPHERE Handbook Standards Overview
The SPHERE Handbook Standards Overview course equips training participants on the contents of the SPHERE Handbook which was originally developed by the SPHERE Project currently known as the SPHERE. It was created in 1997 by a group of humanitarian non-governmental organizations led by the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement. The course aims improve the quality of their humanitarian responses and to be accountable for their actions. The course emphasizes the key philosophy of SPHERE which is based on two core beliefs that people affected by disaster or conflict have the right to life with dignity and, therefore, the right to assistance; and all possible steps should be taken to alleviate human suffering arising out of disaster or conflict. It explores the minimum standards that cover four primary life-saving areas of humanitarian aid: water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion; food security and nutrition; shelter, settlement and non-food items; and health action.
